Writing statistical methods for ecologists

چکیده
The Methods section is a key component of any ecology research publication containing detailed information on how the data were collected and analyzed. However, descriptions which statistical methods used they applied can substantially vary may not provide enough for analyses to be reproducible. Computational programming advances have allowed ecological researchers without strong or mathematical background access use increasingly complex methods. Thus, are written by need accessible across range quantitative expertise. Poorly sections incorrectly inflate strength call into question results an analysis. Although there resources available, we found one that specific writing methods, includes all elements discuss, targeted ecologists. Here guidelines when review frequent errors made in Statistical sections. We highlight some common dos don'ts present simple checklist help guide authors with their ensure reproducibility. illustrate this guidance two examples.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a safe and non-invasive way to assess brain functions by using signal changes associated with brain activity. The technique has become a ubiquitous tool in basic, clinical and cognitive neuroscience. This method can measure little metabolism changes that occur in active part of the brain. We process the fMRI data to be able to find the parts of br...
متن کاملIn defense of P values: comment on the statistical methods actually used by ecologists.
In recent years, a persuasive argument has been made for the use of information criterion (IC) model selection in place of null hypothesis significance testing (NHST) based on P values (Johnson 1999, Burnham and Anderson 2002, Johnson and Omland 2004). In this issue, Murtaugh (2014) questions the basis for this argument. We comment on this paper from the perspective of early-career ecologists a...
متن کاملMachine learning methods without tears: a primer for ecologists.
Machine learning methods, a family of statistical techniques with origins in the field of artificial intelligence, are recognized as holding great promise for the advancement of understanding and prediction about ecological phenomena. These modeling techniques are flexible enough to handle complex problems with multiple interacting elements and typically outcompete traditional approaches (e.g.,...
